My husband and I used Osprey packs (a little different models than you guys have in your pictures) this summer on our six week hike through Spain. I can't tell you how great they were. They were really comfortable, had great cooling systems to keep your back from sweating like crazy. I have grown really attached to my pack, it'll always make me nostalgic for our trip.

Good luck!

I'm with Kate on the quilt!

I too decided on a trecking pack when I bought my last bag, they are just more comfortable. I've since gotten rid of it though as I bought one that was WAY too big and it made me exhausted whenever I had to go up a hill (might have something to do with being out of shape... no... never). But seriously, I want one next time that zips all the way around for easier access. Haven't yet found one though.

Do not pass Go, do not collect $200 - simply start to travel.
Get out there, the world is waiting!

On a totally unrelated note, (are unrelated comments allowed? Will I be censored?) Corey and I are currently in the market for a nice quilt. We are currently using an old one (handmade by my great-grandmother), but it isn't standing up to the wear & tear that well, and I don't want to ruin it. I like your quilt! Can we have it? (kidding...) but, can you tell me where you found it? I'm finding it surprisingly hard to find nice quilts--everyone seems to go the duvet route now, and I roast under a duvet. Plus, quilts are nice. And yours looks like a quality quilt--so many quilts I see are thin & poorly made.

Hi,

I stumbled on your site while surfing online regarding travel (my husband and I are planning a 2.5 month trip) and was wondering if you could tell me a little more about what you're actually packing - I have a total tendency to overpack and was interested in how you whittled everything down! Also, are there any travel guides you'd recommend for Egypt/Jordan?

Thanks!

You mentioned clearance items, so I didn't know if they were returnable. I'm interested in getting a new bag, but it's not at the tip-top of my list of things I currently can't afford.

Beach Packing, I would think, has to be one of the most excessive packing approaches out there. Sand tools, rafts, all different kinds of clothes, 6 pairs of flip-flops, 4 kinds of suntan lotion. It gets kind of ridiculous at times. I'm guessing you'll have double the amount for the beach as you would for RTW.

I'm debating bringing some bicycles to the beach. The bikes would provide more opportunities to see the area(and exercise), but I'm not sure if I want to put up with lugging them around and providing upkeep(salt water = bad).

Mom, I'm almost certain we'll end up with more stuff packed for the beach than we will for the RTW trip! Matthew, I think we plan to return the two that are two small. If we take the two new ones, then the old ones will go in storage, I guess. If we stick with our old ones, we'll probably return the new ones. Are you in the market for a bag?

All I could do was laugh when I saw all the backpacks. I know I wouldn't have a clue where to start the decision process but you all seemed to do a great job of figuring it all out. Now I am curious to see what you all bring when we go to the beach in May.

Wow, I can't imagine living for a whole year off of what you can fit in a single backpack! I guess this means also that you guys don't plan on buying much (if anything) in the way of souvenirs?

I have a travel backpack, which has been good for packing, but I agree that it's awkward to carry. I always feel like I have to bend over at the waist to keep from falling backwards and if I carry it for any extended period of time my back and shoulders hurt in a way I don't think they should.
