Hi there

I was in Ecuador for 3 weeks last October, travelling with a couple of friends. You can see my posts about my time in Banos - a fab place that I'm sure you'd enjoy.

If you want to do the jungle lodge thing in Cuyabeno reserve then try Neotropic tours , run by Luiz Hernandez who owns the Cuyabeno lodge - we didn't have time to go but I gather it is one of the nicest in the reserve. Luiz organised our Amazon river journey further south and he is a great man to know - former military commander, business in tourism and now turned politician. He is married to an Englishwoman and is extremely charming and well connected.

If you want to do a canoe journey in Ecuador, you could do the amazing tailor-made trip that Luiz organised for us. From Banos we went on to Puyo and then met our large dug-out in Canelos. We were taken down-river to the village of Sarayacu, which is a wonderful place to spend a few days. http://www.sarayacu.com/. It can only be reached by air or by river - but the people there are surprisingly clued up as they have been fighting off the incursions of the oil industry for some time. From there you can fly back out to Shell - 1 hr flight, or do as we did and continue down river for another 3 days as far as the Peruvian border and fly out from Kapawi eco-lodge. Luiz could arrange it all for you.

Let me know if you'd like any more info - you can e-mail me via my blog profile.

All the best for the trip.

I voted for Row Row Row and Bolivia. I think that sleeping on the jungle floor is a bit much and the other boat would be boring for you. The Jungle Lodge Expedition just didn't sound all that exciting to me. I chose Bolivia because the animals in the national forest sounded interesting. Seeing the jungle and the pampas was also a bonus I thought.

I'm leaning toward Brazil, purely because it is "iconic Amazon." Speaking of the Amazon, I just saw a commercial for "Survivorman" on the Discovery Channel. Tonight's 9pm episode will be about surviving the Amazon. I thought you might want to tune in and pick up some useful tips. ;-) I checked out the episode description on the Discovery Channel site, and it looks like Les Stroud gets dropped off in the jungle via dug-out canoe. http://tinyurl.com/2waxcv

Oh, and just a reminder, don't let the Discovery Channel fool you. It's not out to save the world...it has largely commercial motives. ;-)

I read both your blogs all the time, Theresa, and I'm going to try to start commenting occasionally!

Ok - I say Brazil even though the above comment. Everything I've ever learned about the Amazon is in Brazil, about Brazil, it's Brazil. Enjoy the river and the jungle and then enjoy Carnivale. Just don't get kidnapped or RDH will be mad at my post.

and Jeff, one of my favorite movies is Medicine Man - deep in the Amazon. So do the river, trek the jungle, meet the natives and zip line for me.

Also, I'm freezing so anywhere warm would be better than 40213 right now!

I voted for Jungle Lodge and Ecuador. I would have voted for Brazil, but since I'm not allowed to go there, you can't either. HAHA. Has something to do with being blonde and being kidnapped that doesn't sound pleasant to me.

I wouldn't want it to be my sole approach to experience the Amazon, but I voted for riverboat. Whenever I see such trips on TV(I think Bourdain went on one), I think they look pretty cool.

And I voted for Brazil because Chile wasn't an option. I don't know much about Chile, but that place fascinates me. Unfortunately, the Amazon has not reached to Chile, but I'm praying that it does one day.

First! Haha! I voted for "on foot" and from Brazil. As you said you do automatically think Brazil when you hear Amazon so it only makes sense to start your journey there. All the various means of travel were interesting in there own right, but to me it just seems like you'd miss something if you don't immerse yourself, tarantulas and anacondas included, in the jungle. So while I picked "on foot" I think "canoe" would be my second choice. They both seem "more" authentic to me. Have you seen the "I Shouldn't Be Alive" episode where some Amazon adventurers have a sketchy guide and they ended up lost in the jungle. The four separated into two pairs and the pair with the guide didn't make it out alive though the other pair eventually made it out. Just thought I'd let you know about that. In the end I don't think any combination of the choices will be bad.
