Happy anniversary! In Asia, they marry for love but they also want someone who has stability. Like your friend said, no job? no house? There's very much an element of business about it but love is still an aspect.

I find your view of Western marriage to be generous in regards to love.

This made me smile. Dan and I are coming on our 9th wedding anniversary and we have people of all faiths (Christian, Muslim, Buddhist, Orthodox Christian, etc.) praying for us to have children. They assume that since we've been married for so long without children we must have medical problems. They usually start with "remedies" for Dan, assuming he's the problem - from eating more red meat to special flowers to who knows what. Like you, we say "not yet" or "maybe later" or go for the traditional "when we have a house, we can think about kids". This journey around the world has made me even more thankful of where I was born as a woman and the strong women who is my mother.

I couldn't have said it any better, so in the words or Byoung Jo, “Jeff had no house. Jeff had no job. But you married him anyway. Why?”

I think dowry should be mandatory. I mean seriously.
