So how much did you two save up for the entire trip? I hope to do some long-term traveling sometime in the future!

Wow, I just saw about $13,000 for the trip so far…..how much are you budgeting for the year? How did you manage to save so much? I really want to take a RTW trip, but can’t fathom how to save that much $$$$.

Hey guys! Great site. What kind of accomodations were you staying in? Hostels, cheap hotels, etc? I’m just trying to compare our budget to yours. Looks like we’re going to quite a few of the same places.

My husband and I have started a website dedicated to the process of the whole trip at http://www.backpackerdaily.com. Since our focus is similar to yours, we’re going to link to you guys. Hope that’s okay.

    Lindsey,
In South America, we mainly stayed in hostels. In southern Africa, we were mainly in backpackers or camping. In the rest of Africa and most of Asia, we were in cheap hotels. Regardless, we always had private double rooms, and most of the time we also had attached bathrooms. In South America, we were probably about 50/50 on attached/shared bathrooms, but everywhere else we were more like 90% attached.

Good luck with your trip! I’ll have to check out your blog. Thanks for linking to ours!

    Hi again…

Another question for you…are your daily budgets per person or as a couple?

I was wondering the same thing as Lindsey. The budgets seem pretty high for some of the areas, and I assume that’s because you’re dealing with two people, etc. I noticed that you were spending considerably more per day in Africa and South America than I spent per day in Europe, which seems…off.

The numbers here show the actual amount the two of us spent (so it’s per couple, not person). Africa, contrary to what most people imagine, is not cheap. The tourist infrastructure in most places is not that well developed and generally caters to more well-to-do travelers. South America is a mix. But as I think I’ve said before, we didn’t set out on this trip to do it the cheapest way possible. We did it comfortably…and sometimes we splurged. We went to the Galapagos and not on the Economy Boat. We took a fair few flights in South America. We always opted for private rooms. We didn’t eat ramen noodles. We rented a car for 8 weeks in Africa. We paid $150 for a microlight flight (each). Was some of this expensive? Yes. Was it worth it? Definitely. You could do it cheaper, certainly; we just opted not to. We had an idea of our budget, and we came in right at it in the end. (Which reminds me that I really need to finish posting our budget info…)
